In the building industry there is a clear trend towards a model-orientated work method. The investments made by leading construction companies worldwide in the investigation and implementation of these new work methods are a clear indication of this trend. An essential component of the model-orientated work method is the use of digital, three-dimensional computer models. Besides geometrical information, these models also contain information regarding costs, quantities, or schedules. In addition to the product, these models therefore also visualise the building process. Processes and work methods well established in for example the automotive industry, ship building, and airplane manufacturing, are being adapted and adjusted to the boundary conditions of the building and construction industry. Within the context of the model-orientated work method, the implementation of the principles of Lean Production or Lean Construction - familiar from the auto industry - can be applied. The use of Lean principles requires information that is more detailed than previously created in the conventional approach to projects. This can only be achieved with a model-orientated work method.

A model-orientated work method results in new processes in planning and execution. Activities that up to now were performed in parallel are now turned into a network by working model-based and brought to dependencies, which results in a time shift in the individual sub-processes. These new processes need to be supported by new software solutions. Up to now, no integrated solution for model-orientated planning and construction had been available on the market. The available products are island solutions that do not enable process integration. This gap is closed with iTWO. ITWO is an integrated solution for model-orientated project management that connects processes in planning and execution. A special weakness of existing products is that they do not support the reuse of information. This is something ITWO will make possible.

ITWO is the first integrated solution for model-orientated planning and construction. For the development of ITWO current and innovative technologies are used:

Object-orientated and relational databases (Objectstore, SQL Server / Oracle)
New, modern user interfaces ("easy to use")
 Web components
 Workflow & process orientation
 Collaboration platform
 .Net technology
